Dogwood Crossing, Miles is a centre for Community, Creativity and Inspiration. Offering an A class Regional Art Gallery, Library, IT centre, event space, workshop room and social history displays, Dogwood Crossing is the premier cultural institution for the Western Downs Region. The centre and its staff play a key leadership, advocacy and advisory role in the region's arts and cultural development.
The innovative centre is strongly supported by the community it serves and is a destination frequently visited by travellers. More recently, the services it provides have been taken up by transient workers, resource companies and encouraged new families to the area. The multidisciplinary delivery of integrated cultural experiences within one enterprise was unique when the centre opened in 2002. The award-winning building has itself become a cultural icon for the region with seven-meter tall stylised bottle trees forming a colonnade down the centre of the facility. Dogwood Crossing, Miles has become the cultural heart of the region and fulfills its vision of "a vibrant centre that connects people and inspires creativity, thus enriching our community and the lives of those who visit us."
Dogwood Crossing offers a number of permanent programs such as Toddler Tuesday in the gallery and library, the Forget-Me-Not program of guided conversational tours through key exhibitions for people in the community living with Alzheimer's disease and regular school holiday programs. Many exhibitions are supported by artist and curator talks, school group activities, community tours or hands-on workshops. Other programs such as Artiz@Miles, a young artist development camp produced in partnership with Flying Arts Alliance demonstrates the institution's connection to wider cultural development organizations and initiatives across Queensland.
The John Mullins Memorial Art Gallery presents a vibrant annual program of exhibitions that rotate every 6-8 weeks. From in-house curated exhibitions presenting the work of local and Queensland-based artists, to national touring exhibitions and collection shows, this gallery enhances regional access to significant arts programs and resources. A dedicated Art Gallery Committee provides input into programming and a team of dedicated volunteers assist staff. The recent addition of the Curved Wall Gallery, a highly-visible and flexible exhibition space, provides professional development opportunities for emerging artists and community groups to present their work outside the formal gallery environment.
Managed by Western Downs Regional Council as an integrated cultural facility, Dogwood Crossing, Miles focuses on participation, interpretation, educational programming and community engagement to ensure that quality arts and cultural experiences are available to the Western Downs community and visitors to the region.
