Hervey Bay Regional Gallery was established in 1997 and is a cultural initiative of the Fraser Coast Regional Council. As of December 2012, the gallery operates within a new purpose-built venue, the Fraser Coast Cultural Centre, adjoining the Discovery Sphere. This development has set a new standard of activity for not only the Gallery but visual arts in the region. As the major Category A Regional Gallery in the Fraser Coast, exhibitions include touring shows from major galleries and museums throughout Australia, and unique state, regional and local exhibits.
HBRG also provides a professional platform for local artists, creative groups and organisations. Programs include: official opening events, artist floor talks, professional development opportunities, children’s workshops once a month, school holiday activities and ArtCon, an accessible art discussion aimed at those experiencing dementia.
HBRG administers an extensive volunteers program, involving up to 50 volunteers in reception duties, installation and events. The ‘Friends of the Gallery’ retail shop and recreational activities are an extension of the volunteer’s hard work and dedication. ‘Friends of the Gallery’ hosts up to four bus trips a year to other galleries and cultural events.
