The museum is located close to the Townsville CBD, with amazing views over Ross Creek and the Marina. It is shaped like a boat, with bow and stern sections.

The collection of the museum is set into 3 separate areas – a gallery filled with military history, and wartime maritime history of Townsville, a large port gallery which tells the story of the Port of Townsville, and how its development has impacted on the development of Townsville, as well as what is arguably the crown in the collection, the SS Yongala display, including her Bell and a porthole. The Yongala display is housed in an original Port building which was relocated and this building also houses the board room and offices.

Another object unique to the museum is the retired HMAS Townsville, currently moored in Ross Creek until a suitable site can be developed for her to be opened for display in.
