Free 3-Day Skills Development Workshop Series

When: 8, 9 & 10 June 2022
Where: The Winton Club, Winton
This free 3-day Skills Development Workshop Series will focus on collection policies, assessing significance, developing museum displays and digitisation.
The workshops are designed as a comprehensive series, however single day attendance can be arranged.
The workshops will be presented by two highly experienced consultant trainers, Dr Melanie Piddocke, Museum Development Officer, Queensland Museum Network and Dr Kate Gahan, Project Manager – Collections and Stories at Museums and Galleries New South Wales.
Reference materials including a folder and USB will be supplied to each participant, along with a label making kit for the display workshop on day 2. Each day we’ll provide, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
DAY 1 – 8 June 2022
10am – 4pm
Collection Policies & Understanding Significance
Dr Melanie Piddocke, Museum Development Officer, Queensland Museum Network will present:
• Collection policies – why they are important and how to write and use them.
• Understanding significance – how to use significance to manage collections.
DAY 2 cont. – 9 June 2022
10am – 4pm
Developing Exhibition Displays
• Exhibitions and displays – how to plan and write for exhibitions and displays, including practical exercise in making labels. A label making kit will be provided for this exercise.
DAY 3 – 10 June 2022
10am – 4pm
Collection Digitisation
Dr Kate Gahan, Project Manager – Collections and Stories at Museums and Galleries New South Wales will present:
• Digitisation fundamentals – the digitisation toolkit, equipment and setup, digitisation standards, object types and their digitisation needs, and saving and storing digital files.
• A basic digitisation setup with a soft-box lighting kit will be used for demonstrations as an example for participants.
