More information
Speculative Architecture is a collaborative studio practice, led by Dirk Yates, that specialises in the design and delivery of arts & educational facilities. We have developed projects with institutional organisations including the Queensland Government, Museum of Brisbane, Institute of Modern Art, National Portrait Gallery Canberra, and HOTA at the Gold Coast.
We have a unique relationship with various arts communities due to our experience and ongoing engagement with contemporary artists & arts organisations. Recent projects include strategic planning with Arts Queensland, the design of the V&A Wedgwood touring exhibition at Perc Tucker regional gallery, and collaborations with artists Taloi Havini and Elizabeth Willing. Previously Dirk has collaborated on public art projects, designed the refurbishment of cultural venues and secondary schools, edited a monthly journal of local art, and acted as a board member of organisations Outer Space and the Institute of Modern Art.
In recognition of design excellence, the practice has received two Queensland state awards for Art & Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects. Dirk has also received scholarships, grants, and funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, Australian Institute of Architects, British Council, and Arts Queensland.
