More information about Monto Museum of Art

Monto Museum of Art (MMOA) is an independent, volunteer-based community organisation operating a free-entry gallery and cultural tourism destination in the North Burnett. The Museum exhibits works from the legacy collection of significant Australian modernist figurative artist Gil Jamieson (1934–1992), who was born in Monto into a farming family during Queensland’s Closer Settlement period. A self-described social realist of the bush, Jamieson stands among Australia’s leading modernist painters, documenting rural life and exploring the tension between colonisation, landscape, and the beauty and brutality of the bush that shaped both his art and his enduring legacy in regional Queensland.

Since its establishment in 2022, MMOA has actively fostered cross-disciplinary practice across music, theatre, and visual arts. By delivering workshops, performances, and community events, the Museum provides a creative platform for local stories to be shared and reinterpreted. These activities nurture regional talent, strengthen partnerships with schools and cultural organisations, and build the foundations for a place-based art movement grounded in the people and landscapes of central Queensland.
